Spirograph is the classic gear-and-ring drawing toy — pin the ring down, drop a gear inside it, thread a pen through one of the gear's holes, and spin. The pen traces the gear's teeth into a looping spiral pattern as it goes. It was the toy that could eat an entire rainy afternoon, one pattern at a time.

Todd Krieger of December West saw something different in the plastic pieces. He thrifted some well-loved Spirograph sets, set Swarovski rhinestones and other materials into the gears' holes in place of the pen, and turned a drawing toy into jewelry.

Smaller pairs measure 1" to 2" across. The larger statement pairs run 3.5" to 3.75" at the outer ring. Since these come from used sets, left and right aren't always twins, and neither is flawless — that's the trade-off of working from upcycled parts. The photos undersell them, but every pair shown is at the same scale, so trust the relative sizes across the pictures.

Todd Krieger has been making jewelry for about four decades. His original work has evolved from the whimsical to recycled and repurposed pieces that typically incorporate the sparkle of classic costume jewelry findings. Todd draws his inspiration from his childhood love of electromechanical devices and the surprising symmetry of their design.

In the late 1980s, a gallery wanted to resell his brooches, and he needed a brand name for the display card. He created a name from a poem he'd written years earlier: December West.

When he isn’t making jewelry or writing, Todd works as inhouse legal counsel at a global software company headquartered in Boston.
