To most people, it’s a rusted saw, a silver spoon, or a discarded doorknob. To Massachusetts artist Judy Hurlburt, it’s the beginning of a sculpture. She wires, screws, and strings these found objects into Re-Purposeful Kinetic Sculptures — one-of-a-kind works of art that catch the wind, come alive with movement, and create gentle, unexpected sounds.

Built to live outdoors, each sculpture is made with longevity in mind. Judy seals wood, beads, and other weather-sensitive materials to help them withstand the elements, while leaving the metal components untreated. Rather than fighting rust and patina, she embraces them as part of the sculpture’s ongoing evolution.

Ballerina is built from a winged corkscrew, its rubber-gripped handles spread wide like arms, with a coiled cocktail strainer forming her waist just above the skirt. A small piece of vintage jewelry sits at her neck, and segment of a rhinestone bracelet forms her tiara. Her tulle skirt carries teal chandelier crystals and clear plastic beads, while vintage jewelry pieces accent her shoulder. Her feet are two vintage spoons — one bent, one balanced en pointe — wrapped in ribbon like ballet shoes. Actual tuned metal chimes hang beneath her, coming in contact with a glass doorknob, giving this piece the most traditional wind-chime sound in the collection.

About Judy Hurlburt

To most people, it's a rusted saw, a silver spoon, or a discarded doorknob. To Carver, Massachusetts, artist Judy Hurlburt, it's the beginning of a sculpture.

Rather than fighting rust and patina, she embraces them as a natural extension of the artwork.
