Re-Purposeful Kinetic Sculpture - Reclaimed Time

To most people, it’s a rusted saw, a silver spoon, or a discarded doorknob. To Massachusetts artist Judy Hurlburt, it’s the beginning of a sculpture. She wires, screws, and strings these found objects into Re-Purposeful Kinetic Sculptures — one-of-a-kind works of art that catch the wind, come alive with movement, and create gentle, unexpected sounds.
Built to live outdoors, each sculpture is made with longevity in mind. Judy seals wood, beads, and other weather-sensitive materials to help them withstand the elements, while leaving the metal components untreated. Rather than fighting rust and patina, she embraces them as part of the sculpture’s ongoing evolution.
The hands have all stopped, and that's the whole idea with Reclaimed Time. Judy pulled the case off an old clock — the very body that once kept its own steady rhythm — and turned it into a rack for secondhand watches, their bands crossed like they're standing guard where a face used to be. Below, salvaged clock gears dangle next to hand-cut brass numerals, pried loose from the faces they used to serve, and a lantern lid reworked into a bell. Nothing here tells time anymore. It just catches the wind and lets you know it's still around.
