Every Donovan Designs tote begins with two reclaimed jute coffee sacks that once hauled beans from around the world. Beth Donovan transforms them in her Provincetown studio, pairing the bold graphics of the sacks with colorful cotton linings — often using one pattern for the sides and another for the bottom or interior pocket. The sturdy handles are upcycled denim or reclaimed belts sourced from a local thrift store, giving each bag a comfortable grip and another layer of creative reuse.

Each tote measures approximately 17" wide, with a height ranging from 15" to 20", depending on the original coffee sacks used. Along with the spacious main compartment, each bag features a large inside pocket for keeping smaller items within easy reach. Every tote is one of a kind and finished with a Donovan Designs patch on the front.

The front carries a full circular Swiss Water Process seal in blue and gold, complete with the little steaming-bean mark up top, and a trailing line of ad copy along the bottom edge — something to the effect of "amazing coffee without caffeine." The back gets specific: "Colombia Excelso EP, 60 Kg net, Swiss Water Decaffeinated Coffee Inc." stenciled in plain black type — about as close to a shipping label as these sacks get. Handles are white webbing printed with colorful anchors, a nautical note that's very on-brand. Inside, a single navy-and-white tweed-textured fabric lines the whole bag — no second contrasting panel this time, just one steady weave doing the job.

About Donovan Designs

Beth Donovan has been sewing all her life. As a child, she would take clothing apart to better understand how it was put together—a technique she still uses today. She makes her own patterns to create bags, pillows, mittens, and quilts from upcycled materials like denim jeans, coffee bags, button-front shirts, neckties, and wool sweaters.

Donovan Designs was the first local maker at Repurposed, joining us shortly after we opened. Because each of her creations is genuinely one-of-a-kind and therefore would need to be individually photographed before being sold on our website, we have many more Donovan Designs products in our Provincetown store than we have been able to list online.
