They replaced the small on January 4, 1970, and were used for a decade. Each token is 23mm in diameter, or between the sizes of the U.S. nickel and U.S. quarter.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp style=\"display: none;\"\u003eThe \u003cstrong\u003eDiamond Jubilee\u003c\/strong\u003e version was the only token that was \u003cem\u003enot\u003c\/em\u003e released to mark a price increase. Available starting in November 1979, these tokens were used at the same time as the large Y cutout (for a 50¢ fare) and celebrated the 75th anniversary of the NYC Subway. They were the same size, but had a diamond punch out at the top. They had the lowest mintage of all tokens we offer.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe \u003cstrong\u003eLarge Solid\u003c\/strong\u003e earrings are a millimeter smaller than the previous tokens with a similar design to the 1970 version, but without the cutout. These tokens went into use on June 28, 1980, when the fare was raised to 60¢, and remained in use until June 2, 1986.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe \u003cstrong\u003eBullseye\u003c\/strong\u003e tokens were introduced in April 1986 for a $1.00 fare, and were used concurrently with the large solid until those were retired. These tokens were again the same size, but rather than being solid brass, they had an 8mm wide center of steel.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eCOMING SOON: \u003c\/strong\u003eThe \u003cstrong\u003eFive Boroughs\u003c\/strong\u003e, or Pentagram, was the last of the tokens created for the New York Subway. Minted in 1991 for a planned fare increase to $1.25, they were instead held back for the increase to $1.50 on November 13, 1995. These were used concurrently with the Metrocard, until the tokens were phased out and the cards became the exclusive way to pay for your ride just after midnight on April 13, 2003.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp style=\"display: none;\"\u003eThe bullseye was replaced by the \u003cstrong\u003eFive Borough\u003c\/strong\u003e token on November 12, 1995. These were minted from red brass in 1991 and intended for use with the January 1, 1992, fare increase to $1.25. Instead, they kept the bullseye and put these in storage until the increase to $1.50. They had a pentagon punch-out in the center, representing the five boroughs of New York City. Sometimes that meant handing a toll taker a ticket and payment, but for some roads, you tossed coins into a basket. Coins or tokens. (Sometimes people missed the basket, but that's a different story.)\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eNew Hampshire started using tokens to pay for Turnpike tolls in 1955. Originally there were two different types: a small silver \"A\" token, which was worth ten cents, and a larger brass \"B\" token, which was valued at fifteen cents. While coins were also accepted, the use of tokens was incentivized by offering discounts for their purchase.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe tokens shown here, made with a brass and nickel alloy, are a newer version that was used on the state's toll roads starting in 1985. Roughly the size of a quarter, since they were sold at a discount there were stories about them being used in Boston's parking meters (when \u003cem\u003ethose \u003c\/em\u003eaccepted coins). It was also common knowledge that the tokens sold at the Funspot Family Fun Center in Laconia — once named the World's Largest Arcade by Guinness — could be used at tollbooths, and the toll tokens could be used in the game machines, but neither Funspot nor the state of New Hampshire seemed to care.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eSo, that's your first bit of history: We used tokens to pay for tolls. The second piece relates to what's on the tokens. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBoth sides of the tokens say NEW HAMPSHIRE PUBLIC WORKS AND HIGHWAYS around the edge and feature the Old Man of the Mountain in the center. The Old Man was a rock formation in Franconia Notch that became the official emblem of New Hampshire in 1945. It was even used on the New Hampshire state quarter in 2000. Unlike other states in the Northeast which issued a ticket when you entered the system and took payment when you exited, the toll roads in Connecticut used a barrier toll system. Each time you passed one of the toll plazas, you paid a quarter (initially).\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIn November 1982, in an attempt to alleviate the bottlenecking at the toll plazas, drivers could purchase a roll of these tokens. For $7.00, you received $10.00 worth of tolls. But they weren't around long. At the end of 1985, Connecticut abolished tolls on the Turnpike.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eEven though they were in use for only three years, the tokens were around long enough to cause some controversy. Some savvy commuters discovered that the tokens issued by the Connecticut Turnpike were just about the same size as those used in New York City's subway. Since they cost a lot less, Connecticut's tokens started showing up in the MTA's fareboxes. By the time the Turnpike tokens were retired, over two million of them had been used for discounted rides on the NYC subway.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eOn one side of each of these tokens, it says CONNECTICUT TURNPIKE around the edge and in the center, along with an outline of the state showing the route of the Turnpike, GOOD FOR 1 FARE. In the 50 years after the dime fare but before MetroCards became the exclusive way to pay for your ride, eleven different styles of tokens were used (per the New York City Transit Museum), but the one best remembered is probably the larger version of the 1953 cutout.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThese cufflinks are made from the following types of tokens:\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe \u003cstrong\u003eSmall Y Cutout\u003c\/strong\u003e earrings are made from the dime-sized brass Y cutout tokens, which were in use from September 1953 to January 1970. Each token is 16mm in diameter.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe \u003cstrong\u003eLarge Y Cutout\u003c\/strong\u003e are made from the big brother of the previous tokens. They replaced the small on January 4, 1970, and were used for a decade. Each token is 23mm in diameter, or between the sizes of the U.S. nickel and U.S. quarter.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp style=\"display: none;\"\u003eThe \u003cstrong\u003eDiamond Jubilee\u003c\/strong\u003e version was the only token that was \u003cem\u003enot\u003c\/em\u003e released to mark a price increase. Available starting in November 1979, these tokens were used at the same time as the large Y cutout (for a 50¢ fare) and celebrated the 75th anniversary of the NYC Subway. They were the same size, but had a diamond punch out at the top. They had the lowest mintage of all tokens we offer.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe \u003cstrong\u003eLarge Solid\u003c\/strong\u003e earrings are a millimeter smaller than the previous tokens and similar to the 1970 version, but without the cutout. These tokens went into use on June 28, 1980, when the fare was raised to 60¢, and remained in use until June 2, 1986.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe \u003cstrong\u003eBullseye\u003c\/strong\u003e tokens were introduced in April 1986 for a $1.00 fare, and were used concurrently with the large solid until those were retired. These tokens were again the same size, but rather than being solid brass, they had an 8mm wide center of steel.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp style=\"display: none;\"\u003eThe bullseye was replaced by the \u003cstrong\u003eFive Borough\u003c\/strong\u003e token on November 12, 1995. These were minted from red brass in 1991 and intended for use with the January 1, 1992, fare increase to $1.25. Instead, they kept the bullseye and put these in storage until the increase to $1.50. They had a pentagon punch-out in the center, representing the five boroughs of New York City. These remained in use on the subway until the introduction of the Metro Card on May 4, 2023.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThere are multiple versions of many of the above with minor differences.
